Normally, when we hear from the post office, it is almost always bad news. But for once, we have GREAT NEWS!
By now, I am sure you heard that the USPS raised postage rates dramatically on August 29, 2021. However, there was a HUGE bit of GOOD NEWS buried in that postage change that we recently noticed.
The maximum size for the mailing category First-Class Mail - Postcard has increased from 4 ” x 6” to 6” x 9”. This means you can now send postcards as large as 6”x9” at the postcard rate instead of the letter rate. Most people probably don’t realize why this is such a good deal. Let me explain.
We sell a ton of small postcards, sized 4.25” x 5.5” or 4” x 6”. This is our biggest seller primarily because it was the cheapest to mail due to postage rates. But being small, it doesn’t really stand out in the mailbox and thus doesn’t work all that well in terms of marketing effectiveness. They also pick that size because they can mail it first-class for a decent rate, so it gets there faster. And most of our clients are always in a hurry.
Our most effective mailers have always been larger postcards. With this change, NOW you can mail larger postcards for the same cheap postage rate as the small postcards, and it is FIRST CLASS. First-Class means it gets to the recipient within five days or less nationwide. Standard mail can take up to 3 weeks. The other side benefit of mailing first class is that it allows you to clean your list by removing the return to sender postcards. Standard mail does not return mail.
Note there is a minimum of 500 pieces for first-class presort mail. Standard mail presort is only a minimum of 200 pieces.
Large postcards stand out in the mail simply because they are bigger than most basic envelopes. They also give you more space to tell your story. The next time you want to do a mail drop, be sure to consider this exciting new option.
